The Australian Memorial in Hyde Park is one of the best that I have seen. It arcs for a 150 feet and is a 9ft high wall with slabs that look like they have slid off the main wall. On the main wall are places names from around the world where Australians have lived from obvious Australian cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin to small town around the World like Wigan (UK) Leon (Spain) and Dublin (Ireland). These place names make large names of the battles where the Aussies died. Like Gallipoli and Ypres. |

Above are two memorials that are in Hyde Park Corner in London. The top memorial is the Royal Artillery Memorial - for the men who died in WWI. Designed by Charles Jagger it was dedicated in 1925. The Statue is in the form of a giant Howitzer. Surrounding the memorial are statues of four bronze artillery men, one is a man reading letters from home, one is a dead, covered in his trench coat, the man picture is almost as a crucified man on a cross, coat draping. Underneath the dead man statue lies the line "Here was a royal fellowship of death" which comes from the Shakespeare play Henry V. The cannon on the howitzer, is angled - was it abled to be fired - points towards the Somme in France. 49,076 officers and men died from the Royal Artillery in WWI and another 30,000 in WWII. The other memorial in Hyde Park Corner is one for Machine Gun Corps. |
